EUPRIO Super Bowl Hate Speech
Workshop programme

Despite the Covid-induced pause in physical meetings, EUPRIO has been working hard to offer a new series of webinars to all members. A recent Super Bowl draw among the member-countries and their representatives created several working groups, each with a given task to organise a webinar together. As a result we can offer you a set of consecutive meetings, scheduled on a monthly basis, filled with opportunities to share insights, best practices, present cutting-edge research results and/or find answers to some of the most discussed questions in today’s university communications.

For EUPRIANS and by EUPRIANS

More and more, higher education institutions and their communication practitioners are being confronted with hate speech, formally known as public speech that expresses hate or encourages violence towards a person or group. Recently, COVID-19 narratives for instance not seldomly polarise into utterances of hate speech.

How to cope with acts of hate speech in the media, on your own communication channels?

EUPRIO is proud to be able to welcome two specialists who will present ways of monitoring hate speech, preventing policies and models of reflection.

Speakers:
Petra Kralj Novak, Assistant Professor at the Department of Network and Data Science at the Central European University. Researches social and mainstream media focusing on the mediated sentiment and hate speech. She is coordinator of the EU REC AG project IMSyPP: Innovative Monitoring Systems and Prevention Policies of Online Hate Speech.

Bjorn Wassink, associate professor Social and Behavioral Sciences Utrecht University. His main areas of interest are, among more: cultural diversity, multiperspectivity, social media, boundary crossing, and dealing with controversial issues.

Moderator
Ludo Koks, public affairs officer at Utrecht University, National Representative of The Netherlands in EUPRIO

Briefing for Directors of communications
Stakeholder Management – Successfully position your university in politics, economy and society

Universities are under pressure, both financially and politically. To establish a strong position, communications directors must implement smart, comprehensive stakeholder management to ensure all target groups are addressed. Politicians must recognise the value that higher education institutions bring to the economy and to society and acknowledge that they are worth funding. We must use targeted communication to demonstrate the benefits and impact of universities. This would benefit the economy, politics and society. To achieve this, we need to collaborate with partners from various groups, including alumni, employees, and, most importantly, elected representatives of the people, i.e. politicians. Everyone must be integrated into our network and receive the appropriate messages and information. During the workshop, we will receive input and discuss best practices.

As the leaders responsible for your university’s communication strategy, you play a vital role in shaping how your institution is perceived by society, politics, and the economy. In close collaboration with your Rector or President, you contribute directly to the strategic direction of your university and represent communication at the leadership table.
