Université de Lorraine is a public higher education and research institution that devotes all its energy to the production, transmission and sharing of knowledge. With a presence in two major cities and 11 towns and urban areas, it plays a key role in the development of the region as the second largest employer in Lorraine, in north-eastern of France. It is committed to raising the level of education of its citizens, drawing on intensive fundamental and applied research and developing interdisciplinary approaches to innovation that accelerate the transfer of knowledge into applications.

With more than 60,000 students and 7,100 academic and administrative staff, it offers a wide range of courses across 24 faculties and institutes, 8 university institutes of technology and 11 engineering schools, making it France's leading engineering training centre. Its research is based on 60 research units, a strong partnership with research organisations (CNRS, Inserm, INRAE, Inria) and a network of academic and industrial collaborations, responding to six major societal challenges: materials, digital technology, health, society, resources & environment and energy.
Université de Lorraine encourages entrepreneurship, notably through the Pôle Entrepreneuriat Etudiant de Lorraine (PeeL), which places it at the forefront of French universities in this field.

Located in the heart of Europe, it is part of a European and international dynamic, developing cross-border training programmes and international partnerships, and promoting the mobility of students, teachers and researchers. It is also a partner in the European EURECA-PRO alliance focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goal: responsible production and consumption.
